Young Researchers of Natural Sciences

I was selected to represent India in the Young Researchers of Natural Sciences conference in Russia. I researched on smart cities and designed a streetlight. The conference, which was attended by delegates from 7 countries, widened my horizons and helped me to truly escape my shell. It sparked scientific curiosity in me, and a series of projects followed.

The following year, I was selected to organize the next edition of the conference in my school’s branch in Amsterdam. I was in charge of helping my teacher advisor with logistics and invites, all while researching about fertile newspapers and natural dyes. During the conference, I was given the duty of compering and guest felicitation (the city mayor and the manager of Indo-Dutch business relations at the Indian embassy). I tried to help with whatever I could- serving food, taking delegate roll call, and setting up the IT systems. I also led the cultural activity for India- dancing to a regional folk song, and introducing the international audience to bangles and “bindis”.

For all my efforts, I received the honor of meeting HE honorable ambassadors of India to Netherlands and Russia, and their ambassadors to India. This experience has helped me make friends worldwide, learn key organizational skills, and discover the power of youth working towards a common cause.

Ritsumeikan High School Super Global Forum

Ritsumeikan High School is annually organizing the “Rits Super Global Forum 2020 Online (RSGF 2020 Online)” with the purpose of tackling global issues through discussions, collaborative workshops and presentations.

Ritsumeikan Invitation

I participated in the global forum on discussion on youth-centric opinions on the pandemic. I researched on the effect of COVID-19 on the Indian economy. I discussed and presented opinion on the same in breakout rooms with participants from several countries. On the last day of the 7 day forum, we discussed solutions and presented the same as a team to international dignitaries.

I created a video based on my research on COVID-19 and the economy. It can be found here- https://cyberspacewebhost-my.sharepoint.com/:v:/g/personal/nalin_nalin_in/EePkQc4FwPdDqL3hFXm50XkBih3BvjvSkQGhExNqF_Kl-w?e=yI8cQ6

My team presenting the solutions we created can be found here-

I also created a podcast for the reunion summit a few months later.

EU Erasmus Green Urban Environments Sustainable City Design Competition by Hong Kong Baptist University

I participated in the global city design competition through my entry by the Goethe institute of India as a German speaking candidate representing India.

I was teamed with other students across India. We spent a month discussing sustainable designs about our own cities with our teams from around the world over the Moodle interactive learning platform. We had weekly meetings with Mr. Brant Knutzen, a lecturer at university of Hong Kong.

Based on our discussion and research, we created a design for a sustainable city covering all aspects such as planning, water supply, sanitation, education and green spaces. I led the urban planning section of the presentation and mapped the city down to 5 square kilometers accuracy.

We presented the city design at a final summit attended by dignitaries from Erasmus, Goethe, and HKBU. We won the Innovation award (75 Euros for each team member) for our work. Our presentation was uploaded by the summit and can be found here. This is our introduction- https://youtu.be/hjOlXoV8qPY

Corporate Social Responsibility

I was admitted in the Horizon Academic Research Program and learnt about Environmental Problems through an anthropological and social lens under Harvard lecturer Dr. James Truncer.

The course involved discussion on urban city design, scientific frameworks, biomagnification, Malthusian philosophies, and agricultural sustainability. There were also multiple assigned readings-

  • David Montgomery- Dirt the Erosion of Civilization
  • Thomas Homer Dixon- The Upside of Down
  • Jonathon Rose- The Well Tempered City

During the same period, I authored a research paper evaluating Corporate Social Responsibility in India. The abstract of the paper is below-

With an increasing threat of climate change and social issues, and a
strengthening global commitment towards sustainable development, the
spotlight has increased on businesses to also play their part for people and
planet. India’s introduction of Section 135 to the country’s Companies Act
comes at a crucial time, albeit with criticism. The law, which took effect
on 1 April 2014, requires companies earning above a certain profit (5 crore
Rupees) to create a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee,
in charge of formulating, carrying out, and reporting the company’s CSR
policy. This brings with it a variety of unprecedented challenges, as CSR
which originated as a charity act and later developed as a business strategy, is suddenly being forced to be an integral component of business.
This research paper aims to explore these problems associated with both
the language and the implementation of Section 135. It also discusses
whether it is against the very spirit of CSR to mandate it or not. Towards the end, the paper provides suggestions to further amend Section
135 based on previous real-world examples of successes and failures of
business-targeted government policies.

My paper was among the 20 published in the Horizon Academic Research Journal. The paper can be found on the following DOI- https://doi.org/10.47611/harp.101

Project WTMCB

WTMCB is a Water Triggered Miniature Circuit Breaker which cuts off electrical current on the detection of any moisture.

This project was developed completely online through online robotics labs, computer simulations, and coding. As school opens, the prototype for the project will be created.

We created the project taking inspiration from our trips to the nearby hill station of Uttarakhand, and the status of electrical devices there which need covers to be protected every Monsoon.

NASA Lunar Loo Challenge

The global challenge required us to create a design for a toilet that would survive being sent to space, have the ability to be assembled in the space station, and function without gravity.

I worked on the challenge for a period of a month with a group of 11 other students. We met weekly to discuss design aspects and look at previous models of space toilets.

In the end, we created the 3D designs and the technical specifications for SpaceChalya (Chalya is Hindi suffix for washroom).

We are a group of 9 passionate high school students, currently studying in Grade 11 of Amity International School,Pushp Vihar in New Delhi,India. We are deeply interested in Science and Technology and are motivated to drive change for the progress of our society using logic, rationale and scientific applications. The Lunar Loo Challenge was the perfect platform for us to bend our brains, innovate and work together to come up with a creative and efficient design of a space toilet functioning in lunar conditions.

Our design of the space toilet incorporates a unique approach, combining past effective aspects and components of space toilets, introducing our own innovations and blend them into a new, feasible, more efficient version of a space toilet. Some of the key features of our design include a ‘largely-movable’ “all-orientation-supported” toilet seat, a two way support handle bar and a rotational interface footrest, along with airflow and water flow suction, to make defecation in space more convenient and efficient.

As a result, we believe that we are suitable to be selected as winners of the lunar loo challenge, owing to our scientific curiosity as a team and individuals, strive for excellence and our innovative, wonderful space-toilet design, made through collaborative hard work and sincere effort and dedication.

Space Settlement Design Competition

  • I led the school team to creating a 50 page proposal and personally created the section on Business and Development. This is based on a technical request for proposal covering structure, automation, business, operations and cost. Our proposal can be found on the link below- https://cyberspacewebhost-my.sharepoint.com/:f:/g/personal/nalin_nalin_in/EtVw7X5-6GBJuG3MjRvs-l4Bxng0Ccn_Sm1Z8fRBK8o_1A?e=5uQurd
  • At the Indian leg of the competition, I led a team of 15 students from across India to creating the Automation section of a new challenge within 24 hours. We presented our proposal to a group of retired NASA and Boeing engineers and were adjudged runner-ups.
  • At the Asian leg of the competition, I again served in the same role and competed with students from India, China and Pakistan. My team again won the runner-ups.
  • The next year, I mentored the junior team for preparing their proposal which eventually got selected to the international levels.
  • All of this involved analyzing the requested proposals, extracting the main points, brainstorming ideas after research, and editing out redundant information. Brief glimpses of the proposal with pictures of our robot designs-
